Garage Floor Coatings and Ontario Winters

Ontario winters affect garage coatings twice: when the car brings in salt and meltwater, and when someone wants the floor installed in the cold. Those are separate issues. Salt is an in-service exposure. Cold is an application limit written on a data sheet. Neither one can be answered with a blanket yes or no for every product.

Salt and meltwater after the floor is in use

Road salt rides in on tires and dissolves in meltwater near the door. It is abrasive when it is crystalline and it is a chemical solution when it is wet. A bonded, intact film is easier to rinse than bare concrete. A thin, damaged, or poorly cured film can stain, blush, or wear in that same track. Mats and a rinse during thaw weeks are maintenance, not a substitute for the right topcoat. No coating described here is “salt proof” in the abstract.

Freeze-thaw at an open door also works on unrepaired cracks. Water that sits in a joint and freezes can open that joint whether or not a coating is planned later. Mention winter leaking or heaving when you request a quote so repair is priced before colour.

Cold slabs and the installation calendar

Every resin system has a minimum slab and air temperature, and a warning about dew point. An unheated Guelph garage in January often sits below the range of common floor products. A heated garage may be fine if the slab itself, not just the air, is warm enough. Temporary heat is sometimes used and sometimes creates its own moisture and combustion problems. The installer has to follow the data sheet, not a wish to finish before a holiday.

Fast polyaspartic products still have a temperature floor. They do not make physics optional. Cure behaviour differs by product, which is why the quote should name one. If the crew proposes winter work, ask what temperature they will measure and what happens if the slab is colder on the day.

Questions before you book a winter date

Is the garage heated? What is the product’s minimum slab temperature? Will vehicles be kept off until the cold-weather cure interval, which may be longer than the summer note? Where will meltwater go while the coating is fresh if the door must open? Request the quote with those constraints in the description so the first answer matches the season.

Questions people ask before requesting a quote

Should I wait until spring?

If the garage is unheated and the product needs a warmer slab, waiting or providing a method the installer will stand behind are the real options. Do not assume a summer cure time in January.

Will winter ruin a floor that was coated in summer?

Winter use adds salt, water, and temperature swings. A sound system is specified with that in mind. Damage usually tracks thin spots, snowplow blades, and chemical spills more than the calendar alone.

Describe the slab, the room, and what is already on the concrete. A provider can follow up about whether a coating project is a fit.
