How to Choose a Garage Floor Coating in Ontario
Choosing a garage floor coating is a short list of exposures and a written system, not a ranking of brand names. Ontario garages see salt, freeze-thaw at the door, and hot tires in summer. Some are heated. Some are not. Start there, then compare quotes that name products. This page does not crown a winner.

Write down the exposure first
Note whether the garage is heated, whether the door faces afternoon sun, whether you park daily, and whether a workbench means solvent or just storage. Salt and meltwater matter more if you drive in winter than if the garage is a studio. Those facts select the conversation: flake for easier housekeeping, a UV-considered topcoat near the door, a different plan if the slab is damp or already peeling.
Write the facts in the request even if you have not chosen a colour. A provider can waste the first visit talking about a metallic showroom floor when you needed a salt-resistant garage surface, or the reverse. Use, not taste, should lead.
Then ask for a system, not a colour
A coherent quote names preparation, repairs, base, broadcast, and topcoat. Epoxy and polyaspartic are the usual pair people compare. Polyurea spray systems are a different conversation. If you only remember one question, make it “what is the wear surface, and what data sheet are we using?”
Samples help. A small board will not show how a full flake floor feels underfoot or how a metallic floor varies. It will show colour better than a screen. Photographs on these pages illustrate coating styles. They are not records of local installations.
Ask to see the data sheet for the wear layer before you approve a colour. Sunlight notes, tire-pickup notes, and the minimum temperature belong on that sheet. If the seller will not produce it, you are comparing a story with a specification.
Questions for the company that would do the work
Who prepares the floor, and will they carry a warranty if one is offered? What do they need from you on the day, including an empty garage and a place for the vehicles? What temperature stops the schedule? You are hiring a scope, not a slogan. Compare the scopes side by side.
When the choice is clear enough to price, use the Guelph garage coating page and include postal code or neighbourhood only so the location is obvious. Availability is up to the provider who responds.
Questions people ask before requesting a quote
Is a bigger flake always better?
It hides more and feels more textured. Smooth and easy to mop points the other way. Choose for cleaning and for how the floor looks wet, not for a trend.
Should I buy a store kit instead?
Kits leave preparation, moisture, and product limits with you. Many peeling garage floors started there. If you want a crew, hire the prep and the system together.
