Repair or Recoat an Epoxy Floor
Repair keeps a sound floor and fixes a local defect. A recoat adds a new layer over a film that is still bonded and compatible. Removal starts over when the film or the slab cannot support either choice. Picking the smallest job feels thrifty until the new layer peels off the old mistake. Use the checks below before you request a number.

When a repair can be the whole job
The damage is local: a chip, a small worn patch, a stain that has not lifted the film. The surrounding coating is stuck tight, the edges can be prepared, and the cause is not an active crack or a wet slab. You accept that the patch may be visible. Decorative metallic floors are the least forgiving here. Flake floors hide more. The quote should say how the edge will be feathered or cut and which product will bond to the old surface.
When a recoat is plausible
The film is worn or dulled but bonded across the room. There is no widespread blistering. Someone can name the existing system or is willing to treat it as unknown and test. The new product lists the old surface as an allowed recoat, or the installer will sand to a profile and use a primer the sheet requires. Recoat windows matter most when the floor is new. An old, chalking surface is not “inside the window” just because years have passed. It needs real preparation.
A recoat over contamination, gloss that was never sanded, or a peeling edge will fail at that edge. If more than a small percentage of the floor is loose, stop calling it a recoat.
When removal is the honest scope
Chips show concrete dust on the back. Blisters keep appearing. The previous patch failed. The coating was a kit applied over sealer. Moisture readings, if taken, sit outside the product limits and no mitigation is proposed. In those cases grinding back to sound concrete, then a new system, is the project. Peeling causes and preparation describe that work. It costs more because it is more work, not because the word repair was upgraded in a brochure.
Put the choice in the quote request
Say which of the three you think you need, and send photos that could prove you wrong. Ask the provider to state repair, recoat, or removal in the first reply. The repair page collects that request. Include whether the floor is a garage, because salt and tires change the wear layer even after a perfect bond.
Questions people ask before requesting a quote
Can one floor need all three?
Yes. A sound field can be recoated while one bay is removed and a doorway chip is patched. The quote should say which area gets which treatment.
Is a recoat just another coat of the same product?
Only if that product allows it and the surface is prepared. Unknown coatings often get a different primer or a full removal instead of a hopeful second coat.
