Can You Coat Cracked Concrete?
You can coat some cracked concrete. You cannot expect a thin film to stop a crack that is still moving, or to hide a spall that changes the shape of the floor. The useful question is what kind of crack you have and what the coating manufacturer allows over the repair. This is a decision guide, not a filling recipe.
Not every line in the slab is the same
Control joints were cut or formed so the slab could crack in a straight line. They are supposed to move a little. Construction joints are the edges between pours. Random cracks can be shrinkage that has stabilized, or a sign the slab is still moving because of soil, load, or corrosion. A crack with one side higher than the other is a different repair from a hairline that is flush.
You can photograph the pattern, note whether it grows in winter, and say if water arrives through it. You should not inject resins from a hardware aisle because a paragraph online listed the steps. Injection and structural repair are outside a decorative coating scope unless a qualified person designs them.
What a coating can and cannot bridge
A coating will mirror the joint. If the joint opens, a rigid coating can crack on that line even when the rest of the floor is fine. Installers often honour moving joints with a joint filler chosen for the traffic, then stripe or cut the coating so the movement has somewhere to go. Static hairline cracks are sometimes filled and coated if the product instructions agree. Wide, damp, or dirty cracks are prepared first or they become a peel line.
Spalls and popped joints may need a patch mortar before any film. That is resurfacing language. The repair page is where to request it. A colour coat over a hole is not a repair.
What the quote should say about cracks
How joints will be treated, which cracks will be filled, which will be honoured, and what is excluded as structural. If the provider believes the crack is still moving, the honest quote may be “do not coat this yet.” That answer is more useful than a low number. Preparation should mention the sequence: open the surface, repair, then coat.
Questions people ask before requesting a quote
Will epoxy glue the slab back together?
A floor coating is not a structural stitch. Treat any claim that a decorative system will stabilize a heaving slab as a reason to pause.
The crack came back through the last coating. Now what?
The joint is telling you it moves, or the crack was never prepared. A repeat coat with the same detail will likely print the line again. Ask for a joint detail, not another colour.
